The story
Futurism is one work in two halves, released with Audio Network in January 2019 as Futurism: Utopia and Futurism: Dystopia.
Utopia sets anxious, tense strings against frantic percussion and electric cello, with harp and luminous arrangements adding wonder.
“Imagined futures fascinate me. The technological optimism of the Great Exhibition, the Chicago World’s Fair and the Festival of Britain are rich sources of ideas. My first radio was an entire sideboard that crackled and picked up Voice of America, Russian state radio and fishing fleets. It felt like a window into another time.”
“Coming from documentary, melancholy can become a default setting, so I happily fight it with retrofuturism.” Asked to describe the album in one sentence, Philip said: “Retrofuturism, both light and dark.”
